Pothole at Tapes

07.09.2008 — Yiannis Skontinakis, Savas Paragkamian, Kostas Kartsonos and Haris Stivaktakis visited the village of Tapes in Lasithi to explore the legendary local pothole “Latisida”. Villagers believed it to be over 400m deep.

Actual depth: 20 metres. The floor contained three cylindrical crates (likely ammunition boxes), 2m tall and 40cm in diameter, probably thrown in during the German occupation, along with sheep and goat bones.
