Most microbial diversity has no name

The majority of microbial lineages detected in environmental samples have no cultured representative, no formal species name, no biochemical characterisation. We routinely sequence organisms we cannot grow, identify, or study beyond their DNA. The gap between what exists and what we understand keeps widening.
